» Job description:Applications are invited for a full time Consultant Anaesthesiologist for the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care in a modern major hospital in Iceland.

The hospital is located in a 17,000 inhabitants town, beautifully located in a coastal area over the fjords, surrounded by snow capped-mountains, Iceland based. For the sport and outdoor enthusiast the region offers many attractions including the northernmost golf course in the world, the ski capital of Iceland, the Northern lights, mountain climbing and glacier exploration, premier fishing, sailing, hiking, horseback riding and bird watching. It also has an international airport, a harbor for cruise-ships and easily connected to the capital Reykjavik by road. There are a lot of major sight-seeing attractions around the area.

The ICU department has 5 beds and about 500 admissions per year. The department is the only one in North Iceland. Invasive and non-invasive Respirator therapy, hemodialysis and hemodiafiltration, invasive monitoring are commonly practiced.

The Anesthesia department has about 3000 surgeries per year. Prosthesis, trauma, general surgery, laparascopic surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, plastic, ENT, ophthalmology are practiced. Head and thorax surgeries are not done in our Hospital, the patients are shifted to Reykjavik. Ultrasound is commonly used for regional anesthesia purposes.

Apart from the OR-anesthesia, the consultant has to work with obstetric pain service and emergency department. Teaching interns, medical as well as nursing students will be required.
It is also expected that the consultant is on-call for at least some days a month, for fast-wing air-ambulance (not helicopter) services which include transfer of patients from various locations in Iceland. Occasionally an International transfer is also expected.

Salary is according to wage agreement between the Icelandic Medical Association and the Treasury. Travel expenses will be paid and assistance provided with accommodation and Icelandic lessons.

Applicants are required to hold a specialist qualification that is recognized and accepted in Iceland. The applicants who have Scandinavian language skills will be preferred but ability to understand, speak and write English is necessary.

The department seeks an individual with excellent skills in the aspects of modern ICU and anesthesia. The applicant must have an experience as a consultant for at least 5 years, good communication skills and willingness to co-operate.
